India's stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana made history by becoming the fastest Indian woman to reach the 4,000-run mark in One-Day Internationals. Mandhana accomplished this feat on January 10 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot during India's opening ODI match against Ireland. She is currently only the second Indian, after Mithali Raj, to reach the 4000-run milestone in ODIs and the 15th woman in the world to do so.
Mandhana reaches epic milestone
In the ninth over of India's chase, Mandhana hit the milestone by hitting Arlene Kelly with a single. Mandhana led the Indian squad with a rapid-fire knock of 41 runs from 29 balls while usual skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was on rest. Her innings gave India a strong start in their pursuit of 239 runs, including a vital 70-run partnership with Pratika Rawal.
Mandhana became the fastest Indian woman and the third-fastest player worldwide to reach the 4000-run mark in this ODI, which was her 95th match in the format. In less than 100 innings, she became the first Indian woman to accomplish this feat as well. With 7805 runs, Mithali Raj continues to be India's top run-scorer in women's ODIs, with Mandhana now coming in second.
India has benefited greatly from Mandhana's outstanding efforts. She broke the record for the most international runs by a female cricket player across all forms in a calendar year and finished 2024 as the top run scorer in both ODIs and T20Is. She also recorded four ODI hundreds in 2024, the most by any player in history, and scored a century in India's lone Test match.
India's final ICC Women's Championship 2025 match before turning their attention to the Women's Premier League is this series vs Ireland. Mandhana continued her outstanding performance from the previous year, starting 2025 out strongly. Smriti Mandhana has established herself as one of the best batters in women's cricket, continuing the tradition of Indian greats like Mithali Raj, thanks to her ability to produce consistently and deliver in pivotal situations.
