Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has been announced as Jonathan Trott's replacement as Pretoria Capitals' head coach for the upcoming season of the SA20 league. Jonathan Trott's tenure with the team was short-lived, he was appointed before the 2025 season but failed to lead the Capitals to the playoffs, with the team winning only two of their 10 matches.

Pretoria Capitals took to social media to announce Trott's exit.

"Jonathan Trott, forever grateful for your leadership and unwavering dedication to the team 🙌 All the best on your next adventure! Once a Capital, always a Capital!," Pretoria Capitals' post on X (formerly known as Twitter) read.

Pretoria Capitals have experienced mixed results in the SA20 league. In the inaugural season, they topped the group stage but were defeated by the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the final. Their performance has since declined, with the team finishing in fifth place for both the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons and failing to qualify for the playoffs. The team hopes that appointing Sourav Ganguly as head coach will reverse their fortunes. This marks Ganguly's first time as a head coach, though he brings significant administrative experience. He served as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal from 2015 to 2019 and was a mentor for the Delhi Capitals in 2019 before becoming the president of the BCCI.

Ganguly's recent role as JSW's director of cricket further prepared him for a coaching position within one of their franchises. JSW co-owns the Delhi Capitals in the IPL and WPL. His immediate priority will be the player auction on September 9, where the Capitals will seek to build a stronger squad under their new coach.

Notably, Trott will continue as the head coach for the Afghanistan national team through the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled for February and March 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. Ganguly, meanwhile, is set to begin his new role with the Pretoria Capitals on December 26. The SA20 season is expected to conclude on January 25.
