Ricky Ponting's tenure as head coach ended last week.

Sourav Ganguly expressed his desire to become Delhi Capitals' head coach.

Delhi Capitals’ (DC) Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly is unlikely to take over as head coach after Ricky Ponting’s exit. Ganguly The former India captain who showed interest in coaching the franchise is not being considered for the role as he has plenty other things to do as Director of Cricket including the overseeing of Dubai Capitals in ILT20 and Pretoria Capitals in the SA T20 League.

Instead, the franchise want to have a head coach onboard who is more hands-on like newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir. The former Indian opener helped Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) win Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and end their trophy drought.

“Ganguly already has a lot of things on his plate – planning multiple things for the franchise as the Director of Cricket. The team needs a very hands-on coach who follows the circuit very aggressively. Like Gautam Gambhir does. It’s no surprise that he has been so successful as a mentor.

“He keeps track of players – both international and domestic. The management doesn’t want a stop-gap arrangement for the head coach position as it’s the season right after the mega auction as the new cycle gets underway,” a source told News18.

Ponting's tenure as head coach ended after seven editions. The decision was taken in June. The Delhi-based franchise is yet to win an IPL title despite being part of the league since inaugural edition like Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

“As you move on as our head coach, we are finding it incredibly difficult to put it down in words. The four things that you told us about in every huddle — care, commitment, attitude and effort, sum up our seven years together,” DC posted on their official ‘X’ handle last week.

DC fail to make it to playoffs

Earlier this year, Rishabh Pant returned to competitive cricket in IPL 2024. DC had seven wins from 14 games but they failed to qualify for playoffs on the basis of inferior net run rate (NRR). The only time DC qualified for the final was in 2020 when current KKR captain Shreyas Iyer was leading them.
