India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav rejoined Mumbai's Ranji Trophy side for the quarterfinal against Haryana. After scoring just 28 runs in five-T20I series against England, Suryakumar was knocked over by Haryana pacer Sumit Kumar.
He had to walk out to bat early as Mumbai suffered a top-order collapse at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Skipper Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and opted to bat first but the top-order was back in the pavillion in the seventh over for just 14 runs. Suryakumar hit a couple of boundaries before Sumit got one through the big gap between bat and pad.
The middle stump was uprooted by a delivery that clocked at 125.5 kmph but had enough swing on it. The veteran Indian batter was left stunned as he looked at the pitch and then back to the stumps before walking off the field. He scored nine runs from five balls.
Dube contributes with cameo
Sumit had earlier dismissed opener Akash Anand as well. After 25/4, skipper Rahane and Shivam Dube shared a 40-run partnership for the fifth wicket. After a fruitful T20I series, Dube looked to attack and hit four fours and a six in his 32-ball 28. He was dismissed by Ajit Chahal as Mumbai lost half the side for 65.
Mumbai lose seven in first session
Rahane could not last long at the crease either. With a few overs to go in the first session, he was outsmarted by express pacer Anshul Kamboj. Shardul Thakur could not rescue Mumbai either and was caught and bowled by Anuj Thakral for a run-a-ball 15. Mumbai lost seven wickets for 113 runs in the first session.
Surya's rough patch
Suryakumar has been struggling to score across formats of late. Before the T20I series, hre recorded two ducks in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 as well. There have been concerns around his form. The 33-year-old will have another chance to regain form in the second innings of the ongoing quarter-final clash.
