India captain Rohit Sharma has ticked off two major events in white-ball formats as he led the side to triumph in T20 World Cup 2024 followed by the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. However, Rohit has not had much success as the captain in Test cricket. After a whitewash at home, India could not retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In addition, Rohit struggled to score after missing the Perth Test. The 37-year-old scored just 31 runs in the three Tests before opting out for Sydney clash. Despite India failing to make it to the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the first time, Rohit is likely to travel to England for the five-Test series after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 as he has got the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and selection panel's backing.
“He has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels that he is the right candidate to lead the Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too has expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket,” a source told the Indian Express.
During the Sydney Test, Rohit had made it clear that he is not retiring from Test cricket. After the Champions Trophy 2025 title win, Rohit quashed the rumours of him retiring from ODIs but is not certain whether he will play in the ODI World Cup 2027.
“Right now, I’m playing really well, and I’m enjoying everything I’m doing with this team, and the team is enjoying my company as well, which is nice. I can’t really say 2027, because it’s too far, but I’m keeping all my options open,” he said while speaking to the International Cricket Council (ICC).
“It’s something that really makes me happy. There are a lot of things involved, there’s so much pride, and the way this team is playing, I don’t want to leave this team. The way we are playing at this point in time, there is so much joy, so much fun to play with all of them,” he added.
