Aleem Dar has stepped down from Pakistan's selection committee

His decision came right after Pakistan's T20 World Cup elimination

Pakistan Cricket has been rocked by the first major resignation after Men in Green's early elimination from the T20 World Cup 2026. Former elite umpire Aleem Dar has officially tendered his resignation to PCB officials, marking the first major departure in the wake of the tournament, as per a report by Minute Mirror.

Aleem Dar resigns from Pakistan's selection committee after T20 WC ouster

Dar, who has served as a key member of the national selection committee since October 11, 2024, decided to step down after the national team failed to secure a spot in the semifinals. His exit leaves a vacancy in a committee currently comprised of Aqib Javed and Asad Shafiq, who are tasked with identifying and vetting talent for Pakistan's future international assignments.

While the committee also includes data analyst Usman Hashmi, his role remains strictly advisory without voting power on final selections. Consequently, the loss of a primary selector like Dar further thins the leadership responsible for the squad’s direction during this period of transition.

Reportedly, Dar’s resignation was a voluntary decision, many believe it was fueled by the mounting pressure on the selection panel. The team's lack of consistency in both batting and bowling departments throughout the World Cup has led to widespread criticism, leaving the remaining committee members to face the scrutiny of a frustrated cricketing nation.

Dar’s brief tenure was marked by controversy regarding team composition and player selection, factors that many believe negatively impacted team chemistry during the tournament. His resignation now presents PCB with a critical opportunity to restructure the selection committee entirely ahead of their upcoming international commitments.

Pakistan's early exit from T20 World Cup

Looking ahead, the PCB will begin assessing applications to fill the vacancy, aiming to appoint a new committee member before the national team’s next major T20 assignment. In the interim, board officials are conducting a thorough analysis of the tactical blunders and personnel failures that occurred during the World Cup, focusing on essential improvements needed before the next Test match.

For Pakistan cricket, the disappointing T20 World Cup campaign serves as a harsh reminder that accountability begins at the top, and the selection committee is directly responsible for the team’s performance on the global stage. The central question facing the PCB now is how they will work to win back public trust and establish stability while simultaneously outlining a concrete plan for upcoming assignments.
