India alll-rounder Washington Sundar is in a race against time to regain full fitness before the 2026 T20 World Cup begins on February 7. He had sustained a rib injury during the first ODI of the three-match series against New Zealand in early January. The 26-year-old has been out of action ever since and is stilll recovering from his injury.
Update on Sundar's fitness
But, there are chances that Sundar will regain full fitness soon as Sports Tak has learned that he has showed good progress in his rehabilitation and has completed four batting sessions so far without reporting any adverse symptoms. He has also began bowling and had bowled a total of four overs on February 2. He has another bowling session scheduled for FFebruary 4 in order to assess his ability to take load.
Recently, India skipper Suryakumar Yadav had also provided an update regarding Sundar's fitness. He was hopeful that the all-rounder will be back in action soon as he had almost started to bat and bowl and had showed signs of recovery.
“I think Washy is also doing well. We spoke to both of them (Tilak and Washington) yesterday. Tilak is much better. Washy has almost started his bowling and batting. He is also looking good. Hopefully, we get him back soon," Suryakumar had said after the conclusion of the fifth T20I between India and New Zealand.
Sundar's numbers in T20Is
Sundar has become an important figure in the side's T20I set-up and has been picked in the squad regularly. He also has quite a bit of experience on his side and has featured in 58 T20Is so far, scoring 254 runs and racking up 51 scalps. It remains to be seen if he will be able to feature for India in the T20 World Cup.
Meanwhile, India have been placed in Group A of the T20 World Cup alongside the likes of Manibia, Netherlands, Pakistan and USA. They will begin their tournament campaign with the clash against USA on February 7 at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.
