Bumrah’s record-breaking night began in his opening over when he cleaned up the dangerous Quinton de Kock for just 6 runs. He continued his dominance in his second over, dismissing Ryan Rickelton, his Mumbai Indians teammate in the IPL—who was caught by Shivam Dube. He capped off his three-wicket haul in the 19th over by catching Corbin Bosch off his own bowling, effectively stalling the South African innings.
Supporting Bumrah’s historic spell, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh also made inroads by claiming two wickets for 28 runs. These dismissals allowed Arshdeep to draw level with Ravichandran Ashwin’s previous record of 32 wickets. Remarkably, Arshdeep has reached this milestone in only 18 World Cup appearances.

David Miller's special helps Proteas post big total
Talking about the match, South Africa posted a competitive total of 187/7 despite the disastrous start. India’s pace attack initially left the Proteas reeling at 20/3 within the first four overs.
The comeback was led by a blistering 97-run partnership between veteran David Miller and young Dewald Brevis. Miller anchored the innings with a sharp 63 off 35 balls, while Brevis provided explosive support with 45 off 29 deliveries. Their counterattack forced India onto the back foot, particularly during the middle overs where they targeted the spin duo of Varun Chakaravarthy and Washington Sundar.
The Proteas found a perfect finish through Tristan Stubbs, who played a high-impact cameo of 44 off just 24 balls. Stubbs punctuated the final over by taking 20 runs off Hardik Pandya.
