Story Highlights:

Gautam Gambhir doesn't believe in eras of a cricket team.

Gambhir says India have done well in ICC events but lost 2 out of last 3 ODI series.

On March 8, India crushed New Zealand to win their third ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title. As Team India’s dominance in ICC tournaments continues, head coach Gautam Gambhir was asked whether it is India’s era in white-ball cricket. Gambhir had a straightforward answer. In his typical fashion, he pointed out that India have lost two out of three ODI series since they won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

"See, I won't talk about white-ball cricket, because in white-ball cricket, we've lost two out of the last three series in one-day format. If it was an era, we wouldn't have lost two series," said Gambhir in the post-match press conference at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

While Gambhir admitted that India have done well in ICC tournaments, he doesn't believe in eras.

"I don't believe in these eras. You have to turn up every day, whichever match you're playing. When you're playing for your country, you want to win each and every game.

"So, there's no if and but about this - it's not that this is a bilateral, or an ICC trophy, or the World Cup. So, I can't differentiate between bilateral and ICC - because it's the same. Everything exactly remains the same," he added.

India’s run in ODIs since Champions Trophy triumph

After the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, India travelled to Australia for a three-ODI series. India lost the first two ODIs on Shubman Gill's ODI captaincy debut. India won the dead rubber match with former skipper Rohit Sharma scoring a century.

Then, India hosted South Africa for white-ball series. India won the ODI series 2-1 with Virat Kohli scoring two centuries and a fifty. India played another white-ball series at home against New Zealand. Despite Kohli continuing his red-hot form, India lost the ODI series.

What’s next for India’s ODI team?

After the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Indian team will assemble for a one-off Test against Afghanistan, followed by a three-ODI series in June. In July, India will play a three-ODI series on England soil.

Currently, India are the no.1 ranked ODI team. Kohli is the no.2 ODI batter, followed by Rohit (no.4), Gill (no.5) and KL Rahul (no.10). However, the only Indian in top 10 bowling rankings is wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav (no.8).
