England, Australia lose WTC points after Ashes series ends

The Ashes 2023 series between England and Australia teams ended on Monday, August 2, and now both teams have been penalised for slow over-rate, resulting in crucial World Test Championship (WTC) point deductions. As per the revised ICC regulations, both players from both teams were subjected to a 5% deduction from their match fees and the loss of one WTC point for every uncompleted over.

Despite a 2-2 draw in the Ashes series, Australia managed to retain the Urn. England, led by Ben Stokes, secured an impressive 49-run victory in the final Test at The Oval, which prevented Australia from clinifying their first Ashes series win in England since 2001.

For slow over-rates during the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Australia lost 10 WTC points from the recent Ashes series. Meanwhile, England saw a loss of 19 points in total, due to falling short in four out of the five Tests, where the requirement is to bowl 90 overs per day.

In the World Test Championship, a Test win earns a team 12 points, a draw earns four points, and no points for a loss. England was two overs short in the first Test at Edgbaston, nine short in the second Test at Lord's, three short in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, and five short in the final Test at The Oval.

As for the match fee fine breakdown, Australia faced a 50% match fee fine due to falling 10 overs short in Manchester during the fourth Test. This corresponds to a 5% fine for each over short, capped at a maximum of 50%.

England's fines varied across the series. They faced a 10% fine for the first Test, 45% for the second, 15% for the fourth, and 25% for the fifth, reflecting the slow-over rate offences in the first two and last two Tests of the series.
