On July 9, The Sun reported that Carey and teammates David Warner, Usman Khawaja went for a haircut at Barnet's Barber Shop in Leeds. Barber Adam Mahmood claimed that the openers paid and clicked pictures but Carey refused to pose for photos and left without paying 30 pounds as he did not have any cash on him.
“I can confirm that Alex Carey has not had a haircut since we were in London. Get your facts right The Sun,” Smith wrote on Instagram Threads.
Earlier, former England opener Alastair Cook also said in the commentary box that Carey did not play for the haircut.
“They all came in just before we shut. We cut their hair and had a great laugh. But we don’t accept cards and Alex said he had no cash on him. Well, there’s a Tesco cash machine literally round the corner he could have run to. He could have nipped back to their hotel and been no more than five minutes but instead he said he would transfer it,” Mahmood told The Sun.
Carey has faced flak from England fans and former England cricketers for the controversial run out of home side’s wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow.
In the ongoing Test at Headingley, Leeds, Carey failed to make an impact in the first innings as he got out to Mark Wood for a single-digit score. Carey became Wood's one of the five victims on his Test comeback.
On the other hand, Steve Smith outside edged one to Bairstow off Stuart Broad's bowling in the first innings. It was all-rounder Mitchell Marsh’s run-a-ball 118 that helped Australia post 263.
In the second innings, he could not do much damage either. Smith got dismissed by England off-spinner Moeen Ali as he played a reckless shot straight to mid-wicket fielder Ben Duckett. At the end of Day 2, Australia's score was 116. On Day 3, the first two sessions got washed out due to incessant rain.
