Stuart Broad created history on Day 1 of the fourth Test of Ashes 2023 as he became the fifth bowler to take 600 Test wickets. Broad also became the second fast bowler after teammate James Anderson to take 600 Test wickets.
Broad achieved the milestone with the wicket of Travis Head in the 50th over of Australia's first innings. With Head’s wicket, he also left legendary England all-rounder Ian Botham behind. Broad is now the highest wicket-taker in Ashes history for England.
Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan is on top with 800 wickets followed by Australia's Shane Warne (708 wickets), England's 40-year-old pacer Anderson (688 wickets*) and India's Anil Kumble (619 wickets).
Botham held the previous record for more than three decades. He took 148 wickets from 36 Tests at an average of 27.65 including nine fifers. Broad went past Botham in his 39th Test. He has eight fifers in Ashes already.
Warne holds the record for most wickets in Ashes history with 196 scalps. The leggie is followed by Australia's Dennis Lillee (167 wickets) and Glenn McGrath (157 wickets).
The 37-year-old started off with the wicket of Usman Khawaja with the new ball in the fifth over. Khawaja failed to pick the one coming in and it hit him right in front of the stumps. Khawaja got out for a single-digit score.
In the second session, Head went for the pull shot. The top edge went to the fine leg fielder Joe Root who completed a catch running from the deep. Head missed his half-century by just two runs.
In the ongoing Ashes 2023, Broad has a chance to surpass McGrath and become third highest wicket-taker in the Ashes history.
