Australian opener David Warner has not had a breakthrough Ashes series he had hoped for. Backed by the skipper Pat Cummins and team management, Warner was given a chance to prove himself but he failed to make the best of it. His trouble against England pacer Stuart Broad continued. In the third Test, it was the 17th time Warner was dismissed by Broad. In the Headingley Test, he registered scores of 4 and 1. It is likely that he warms the bench for the fourth Test at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Warner’s wife Candice’s Instagram post on July 10 has sparked retirement rumours.
“The end of an era for us touring with test cricket, it’s been fun. Forever your biggest supporters and your girl gang. Love you David Warner,” Candice posted on her Instagram account.
Warner has scored 141 runs from six innings in Ashes 2023 so far. Before the Ashes, he had said that he will retire from Test cricket after playing at home against Pakistan. Also, he had said that T20 World Cup 2024 will be his final international tournament.
"I probably owe it to myself and my family - if I can score runs here and continue to play back in Australia - I can definitely say I won't be playing that West Indies series.
"If I can get through this (WTC final and ensuing Ashes campaign) and make the Pakistan series I will definitely finish up then," he had told the reporters on June 3.
Among many, former Australia wicketkeeper-batter is the latest to criticise Warner as he felt that the southpaw was not technically sound at Headingley.
“What he put out at Headingley wasn’t good enough,” Healy said on SENQ Breakfast.
“His technique recently had been much better, head over the ball, but it all disappeared at Headingley.
“He was jumping around, he was unstable at the crease and he was distracted by the crowd. It wasn’t good enough and we need better because he’s putting Marnus (Labuschagne) and Steve Smith under way too much pressure.
“Marnus has been like an opener, and he spends a lot of energy getting to 20 and 30, then he’s getting himself out too.”
