West Indies opener John Campbell played one of the finest knocks for his team in the last few decades under pressure. Expected to surrender like the first innings of the ongoing second Test, Campbell registered his maiden Test century in his 25th Test appearance. Campbell became the second West Indies opener in 21st century to score a century on Indian soil.

Previous West Indies openers to score a Test ton vs India in 21st century

The previous West Indies opener to achieve the feat was Wavell Hinds who scored 100 runs from 200 deliveries against Sourav Ganguly-led India in 2002 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

The last Test century by a West Indies opener against India came in 2006. In Basseterre, Darren Ganga scored 135 runs from 294 balls against Rahul Dravid-led India. The Test ended in a draw.

Campbell reached his century with a six against Ravindra Jadeja in the 58th over of the innings. He is the fifth West Indies batter to reach his maiden Test century with a six. He is the sixth West Indies batter to score a Test century in Delhi.

Campbell’s long wait for maiden Test ton

The southpaw took second-most innings (48) for an opener to score his maiden Test century. The record belongs to South Africa's Trevor Goddard who took 58 innings to breach three figures for the first time. 

Also, Campbell became only the second West Indies Test opener barring Kraigg Brathwaite to score a Test century since July 2012 against a team other than Bangladesh or Zimbabwe. 

How Campbell fell to Jadeja after big partnership

Campbell was eventually dismissed by Jadeja in the 64th over of the innings. He went for the reverse sweep but was trapped in front of the stumps. His knock of 115 from 199 was laced with 12 fours and three sixes. 

After early wickets of Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze on Day 3, he staged visitors' comeback alongside Shai Hope. The two batters shared a 177-run partnership for the second wicket. When he departed, West Indies were 212/3. At lunch break, West Indies were 252/3 after 78 overs, trailing by just 18 runs.
