The first day of the second India vs West Indies Test belonged to Yashasvi Jaiswal. The left-handed opener slammed a majestic 173*, which helped India cruise to 318/2 at Stumps on Day 1 of the second and final Test against the West Indies side, being played at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday. Jaiswal and India skipper Shubman Gill (20*) were unbeaten at the end of the day, with the hosts in a commanding position. The duo added 67 runs off 129 balls for the third wicket. India made 98 runs in the final session and lost just one wicket, that of Sai Sudharsan.
Gill and Tevin Imlach collision
Before the end of the day in the 85th over, skipper Gill suffered a nasty collision with West Indies wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach. Both players looked uncomfortable, and the physios arrived to check the players. As per the strict laws in place for head injuries, the Indian captain had to undergo a concussion check. As the players waited for the physio to make his way, Jaiswal turned up to check on Gill, and the clip of the incident went viral on social media in no time. Here is the video.
Yashasvi Jaiswal joins elite list featuring Sachin Tendulkar
Yashasvi Jaiswal has now scored seven centuries in Test cricket, and impressively, five of those have been big ones, over 150 runs. In fact, his first four centuries were all 150 or more, something only one other player, Graeme Smith, has ever done before.
This year, the only times Jaiswal scored hundreds below 150 were during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 against England. Jaiswal is the first player since 2000 to score five 150+ Test knocks before turning 24. The only player in history who had more such big scores at that age was the legendary Don Bradman, who did it way back in 1932.
Player | Years (From first 150+ score) | Country | 150+ Knocks At Age 23 |
Don Bradman | 1930-1932 | Australia | 8 |
Yashasvi Jaiswal | 2023-2025 | India | 5 |
Javed Mianand | 1976-1979 | Pakistan | 4 |
Graeme Smith | 2002-2003 | South Africa | 4 |
Sachin Tendulkar | 1993-1997 | India | 4 |
With this achievement, Jaiswal has also gone past Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most 150+ scores by an Indian at such a young age.
