Cricket Australia (CA) on August 26 announced their squad for ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Veteran left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen did not find a place in the squad Chief selector Shawn Flegler said Jonassen was "unlucky to miss out" despite impressive performances of late. Hours later in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) 2024, she bowled an economical super over for Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) helping them register their first win of the season.
Jonassen failed to justify the promotion up the order and scored just one run. She lost her wicket to Chloe Tryon. Defending a total of 128, Jonassen was impressive with the ball conceding just 15 runs from her quota of four overs. She bowled an excellent penultimate over conceding just three runs. Tryon also got run out in the over. She managed to keep a set batter Erin Burns quiet and left 11 runs to defend for Shikha Pandey.
After a run out on last ball led to game heading into super over, Jess stepped up to the task again. First Deandra Dottin hit two sixes followed by Jemimah Rodrigues finishing the super over with a boundary. Shabnim Ismail conceded 19 runs in the super over. Dottin handed the ball to Jonassen and she got the wicket of Burns whereas Tryon got run out again. She conceded just five runs as Knight Riders registered their first win to stay alive in the tournament.
How Knight Riders can still reach WCPL 2024 final
Their chances of reaching the final depend on the result of next match between Guyana Amazon Warriors and Barbados Royals. If Royals beat Warriors, Knight Riders need a win in their last league match. If Warriors beat Royals, they need to win by a massive margin to cement place in the final.
Jonassen’s form in WCPL 2024
Jonassen has been impressive in the tournament so far taking three wickets from three games. Her economy rate of 4.45 runs per over stands out. However, she is yet to fire with the bat. After a duck in Knight Riders' opening game, she scored 28 runs from 23 balls followed by a single-digit score.
