The recently concluded Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023 hogged immense limelight and success as it was a revolutionary step to take women's cricket to a different level altogether. Arguably WPL 2023 proved to be more successful league than Women's Big Bash League. Harmanpreet Kaur's Mumbai Indians (MI) emerged champions of WPL's blockbuster inaugural season after beating Meg Lanning's Delhi Capitals (DC) in the summit clash.
After WPL 2023's hit show, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now contemplating to make major changes to the glitzy league's format. BCCI is planning to to introduce ‘Home-and-Away’ format in the WPL going forward.
The first edition of WPL saw all matches played in Mumbai but you might see the ‘Home-and-Away’ format coming into action from the next season. A source in the know of development told Sports Tak that in order to engage more fans the BCCI is looking forward to bring the change in the format.
“In order to engage more fans we are thinking to introduce home away format going forward. As of now it's just the plan as nothing has been discussed with the officials but the idea will be pitched when time comes. We are very keen to improvise women's cricket and whatever will be required to improve will be done,” the source said.
It was also learnt that there will be more interesting changes which will come into action from the next season.
“There will be some more interesting changes from next season, however, it's early to talk more about it,” the source added.
WPL 2023 final between MI and DC grabbed eye-balls as more than 10 million new viewers watched the game on Jio Cinema which is massive in Women’s Cricket, which validates the popularity of the cash-rich league.
A total of five franchises - Mumbai Indians (MI), Delhi Capitals (DC), Gujarat Giants (GG), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and UP Warriorz (UPW) participated in the contest as 448 cricketers went under the hammer - of which 269 were Indians and 179 overseas (19 of those players were from the Associate Nations).
It will be interesting to see how the WPL 2024 unfolds after achieving massive success in its inaugural season.
