Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has revealed that the apex cricket council is looking at an October-November timeline for the next season of the Women's Premier League (WPL) falling around the festival of Diwali.
"We are considering the possibility of scheduling WPL in the 'Home and Away' format in the Diwali window. This means that this tournament will be held in a different time window, not two seasons in a year. Women's cricket now has a 'base' of viewers and this number will only continue to grow as we expect more and more people to turn up for the next WPL," the BCCI secretary told the media on Friday (April 14).
The first season of WPL was played from March 4 to 26 at the DY Patil Stadium and the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Mumbai Indians (MI) were the winner and after a successful inaugural season, the board plans to make it bigger. Sports Tak said earlier in April that the 2024 WPL season can be done in a 'home and away' format this time around like the Indian Premier League (IPL). This gives the teams the advantage of playing in their home.
No decision on Asia Cup
Shah, who is also the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president, had earlier cleared the fact that India will not travel to Pakistan to play in the Asia Cup. He also said that answers have been sought from other countries on hosting the matches in neutral venues. “We are waiting for feedback from other countries to finalize the venue of the 2023 Asia Cup and get clarity on the India-Pakistan match,” Shah said.
Asian Cricket Council's tremendous earnings
Meanwhile, under the leadership of Shah, the ACC has earned US $26.2 million. “We have achieved a historic milestone in generating additional revenue and generating new avenues of income for the ACC,” he said.
On the World Cup schedule, Shah added that all the existing infrastructure will be upgraded ahead of the tournament, "All the existing infrastructure in the country will be upgraded before the World Cup."
