Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women (RCB) have officially strengthened their coaching staff ahead of the 2026 edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL) by naming former England Women's medium pacer Anya Shrubsole as their new assistant coach. This strategic appointment reflects the 2024 champions' commitment to incorporating a massive amount of experience and a high-level skill set into their support structure as they aim for continued success.
Anya Shrubsole become RCB's assistant coach
RCB-W, led by captain Smriti Mandhana over the last three seasons, achieved their breakthrough moment in the 2024 season when they defeated the Delhi Capitals Women in the final to lift the franchise's maiden T20 trophy. The addition of Shrubsole's expertise in medium-pace bowling is expected to be hugely beneficial for the Bengaluru-based franchise as they prepare for the 2026 tournament, with the clear goal of securing their second WPL title.
“A proven champion, now stepping up to guide our girls. Join us in welcoming Anya Shrubsole – former England pacer, 2017 Women’s World Cup winner, and Player of the Match in the final – as RCB’s Assistant Coach in the Tata WPL Anya’s rich experience and champion mentality will take RCB’s Play Bold philosophy forward," RCB wrote in a statement on social media.
Meanwhile, RCB Women head coach Malolan Rangarajan admitted Anya brings with her a wealth of experience and leadership.
“Anya brings with her a wealth of experience and leadership. She will oversee our bowling unit and serve as an integral member of our think tank. I have no doubt she will settle in seamlessly with the group and make a significant impact both on and off the field," Rangarajan said in an official statement.
Shrubsole's illustrious track record
Shrubsole is a true veteran of English cricket, having represented the England Women's team in 173 international matches across all three formats. Her career statistics highlight her impact, particularly in the shortest format of the game. In WT20Is, Shrubsole was a lethal bowler, claiming 102 wickets at an exceptional average of just 15.22, while maintaining a superb economy rate of only 5.95 runs per over. Her effectiveness wasn't limited to T20s; she also proved highly successful in the 50-over format, taking 106 wickets across 86 One-Day International matches. Furthermore, her vast experience includes eight appearances in Test cricket. Bringing this deep knowledge and skill set to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women's coaching staff is expected to significantly benefit the team's pace attack.
