Cricket South Africa has delayed the announcement of its squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, sparking major discussions around the team’s final selection decisions ahead of the tournament.
CSA was initially expected to unveil the squad live, but just minutes before the scheduled announcement, the board released another statement confirming that the event had been postponed due to further internal reviews. The governing body added that a revised date for the squad reveal would be announced soon.
The delay has attracted attention because all participating teams are required to submit their final squads to the ICC before the tournament support period begins in early June.
Why Cricket South Africa delayed the squad announcement
According to reports, the postponement is not linked to any major dispute within the South African camp. However, a few crucial selection calls are reportedly still being discussed before the final squad is locked in.
One of the biggest talking points surrounds the potential return of former South African pace star Shabnim Ismail.
The experienced fast bowler retired from international cricket after the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup but has now reportedly made herself available for selection once again. Despite staying away from international cricket for more than three years, Ismail has continued to impress in franchise leagues around the world.
Reports suggest that South Africa head coach Mandla Mashimbyi is interested in bringing the veteran pacer back into the setup to strengthen the bowling attack.
Her return could prove crucial, especially with star all-rounder Marizanne Kapp recovering from illness. Kapp has not featured for South Africa since February and missed recent series against New Zealand and India.
However, she is expected to regain fitness before the start of the Women’s T20 World Cup.
Dane van Niekerk’s situation adds to selection dilemma
Another major discussion point within the South African setup is the fitness status of former captain Dane van Niekerk.
Van Niekerk returned to international cricket last year but suffered a calf injury during South Africa’s tour of New Zealand and has not played since then.
While her experience with the bat remains valuable, concerns reportedly remain over her overall fitness and bowling readiness ahead of the tournament.
With the ICC deadline approaching quickly, Cricket South Africa is now expected to finalise its squad soon as preparations intensify for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.
