Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has addressed recent controversial remarks from his predecessor, Xavi Hernandez, in a measured and diplomatic manner, emphasizing a positive professional relationship. However, he refused to disclose details of their private discussions.
Barca manager Hansi Flick breaks silence on Xavi controversy ahead of crucial UCL clash
Speaking ahead of Barcelona's crucial Champions League round of 16 clash against Newcastle United, Flick stated:
“We are colleagues, we have a good relationship.”
The German head coach added:
“I have visited him, we have seen each other, but it is a private matter”.
The 61-year-old effectively shut down further speculation about the circumstances surrounding his appointment and continued:
“I know the truth and I will keep it to myself. I will not reveal it here”.
The comments follow an explosive interview by Xavi with La Vanguardia, where the former Barcelona coach detailed a personal visit from Flick shortly after his May 2025 dismissal. Xavi described Flick as “very honorable” and recounted how the German coach apologized during a lengthy conversation at his home, explaining that club instructions had prevented earlier transparency about the managerial change.
Xavi's broader criticisms targeted club president Joan Laporta, accusing him of poor handling of the transition and even alleging interference in potential player returns, including Lionel Messi. Laporta swiftly countered Xavi's claims during a recent presidential election debate, admitting the remarks “surprised and hurt” him while defending the decision to part ways.
The Barcelona president highlighted the squad's improved results under Flick, noting pointedly that “the same players who were losing with Xavi are now winning with Flick.” The ongoing public exchanges underscore lingering tensions at Barcelona amid the club's presidential campaign, though Flick's composed response has helped de-escalate immediate drama and refocus attention on upcoming competitive fixtures.
