Christian Eriksen did not get the nerves get the better of him in Denmark's opening game at Euro 2024. Three years after suffering a cardiac arrest in Denmark's opening encounter of the previous edition in 2021, Eriksen scored the only goal for Denmark against Slovenia.
It did not take much time for Erisken to get underway. He scored in the 17th minute off a flick-cum-assist from Jonas Wind to get Denmark an early lead. However, Erik Janza in the 77th minute scored the equaliser for Slovenia. His shot took a big deflection and went past Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
While the semifinalists of the previous edition could not get off to a winning start, Slovenia are still waiting to register their first win of the tournament.
Bellingham scores early in England's win over Serbia
Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham scored early in the first half to help England get off to a winning start by beating Serbia 1-0 at Veltins Arena, Gelsenkirchen. In the 13th minute, Bukayo Saka's cross found Bellingham who put it past Serbia goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic.
"It's a great start for me personally to get my confidence up and to help the lads get the win is the most important thing,” Bellingham said.
England would have doubled the lead but Rajkovic was able to push Harry Kane's far post header. This was Kane's 23rd appearance in the major tournament, most for England. On the other hand, this was Serbia’s first appearance at the Euros since 2000.
“It's a tough game. They are a tough team and have good players,” the England captain said. "We stood up to it well and it is good to get the three points and (for us) to progress. It's good that we got the win today,” Kane said.
England will now face Denmark in the Group C clash clash in Frankfurt on June 20.
Brawl goes viral
Meanwhile, a brawl between England and Serbia fans made headlines. Police rushed to separate brawling fans outside a restaurant decorated with Serbian flags. The footage making rounds on social media shows men throwing chairs at each other.
