FIFA President Gianni Infantino has officially confirmed that Iran will compete in the 2026 World Cup, including matches hosted in the United States. The governing body of the World Cup has stated that it is FIFA's responsibility to unite people through football.
The announcement, made during the FIFA, directly addresses speculation about Iran's involvement amid heightened geopolitical tensions between Iran and the US.
FIFA confirms Iran's participation in 2026 World Cup in USA despite tensions
Infantino stated:
"It’s very clear, Iran will be there and our responsibility is to unite.”
The FIFA president underscored the organisation's commitment to the tournament proceeding as planned. Iran became one of the first nations to qualify for the expanded 2026 tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
However, participation had been cast into doubt following military conflicts involving the US and Israel, with Iranian officials previously expressing reluctance and requesting potential relocation of matches away from US venues over safety and diplomatic concerns.
The US has indicated it would allow the team but restrict individuals with ties to certain Iranian entities. With the event set to begin in June 2026, all eyes will be on how security, visas, and on-pitch rivalries unfold, particularly potential matchups involving Iran and the host nation.
