Omang Dodum's brace in second half helped India register a thumping 3-0 win over Pakistan in their opening clash on Group B in the SAFF Under-20 Championship. India also booked a spot in the semifinals as this was Pakistan's second consecutive defeat in the competition. They had lost to Bangladesh in their campaign opener as well.
On March 26, Dodum had an early opportunity to score as Vishal Yadav provided with a pin-point cross into the box from right flank. But, Dodum failed to convert into a goal. But, it did not take Blue Colts much time to get the lead. Gurnaj Singh Grewal lofted the ball over Pakistan defence to find Yadav whose first attempt was blocked. However, he was quick to respond and scored on rebound, beating the Pakistan goalkeeper at the near post.
Pakistan tried to make a comeback but they couldn't convert two golden opportunities in the first half. Indian goalkeeper Suraj Singh Alheibam was exceptional in denying Pakistan an equaliser.
In the second half, Pakistan were dominated by India. On counter-attack, Samson Ahongshangbam's cross found Rishi Singh Ninthoukhongjam. Then, Dodum headed the ball past goalkeeper Zulqurnain to double the lead.
For the rest of the game, Pakistan were desperate to score a goal but the Indian defense frustrated them. In the 88th minute, Pakistan's problems increased with Muhammad Junaid's tackle to bring down Prashan Jajo in the penalty area. Referee Virendha Rai was quick to award a spot-kick. Dodum did not break a sweat and completed his brace.
Bangladesh in good form
Before the semifinal, India will go up against Bangladesh on March 28 in their Group B clash. Earlier, Bangladesh had beaten Pakistan 2-0. Ronan Sullivan scored the brace for Bangladesh.
