Co-hosts Canada were able to manage a draw when they played Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage fixture at BMO Field.  As the two sides shared points, thos one layer took the Best Player of the Match award.  

Kone named Superior Player of the Match as Canada earn first World Cup point in 1-1 draw

The honor went to Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone who was voted Superior Player of the Match by fans following his country’s hard-fought 1-1 draw. The 23-year-old Sassuolo player delivered an energetic, all-action performance in central midfield, covering ground effectively and helping Canada dominate possession in their first-ever home World Cup match. 

Kone’s tireless display earned him the fan-voted award, which FIFA presented in its sponsored “Superior Player of the Match” format. Meanwhile, talking about the match, Bosnia and Herzegovina took the lead in the 21st minute through a header by Jovo Lukic from a corner kick. 

Canada pushed forward throughout and were rewarded late when substitute Cyle Larin stunned with the equalizer in the 78th minute. The result gives Canada their first point in World Cup history after six previous defeats in the competition. The co-hosts will now turn their attention to upcoming Group B matches against Qatar and Switzerland as they look to advance from the group stage on home soil.
