It was one of the biggest heartbreaks in world football when Lionel Messi had to leave FC Barcelona because the club failed to renew his contract after which, the Argentine legend was transferred to Paris Saint-Germain.
A once unbreakable bond was strained following the shocking transfer. However, club president Joan Laporta has shared some optimistic updates on the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s relationship with the Spanish giants.
Barcelona president shares Lionel Messi’s ‘improving bond’ with club
According to the 63-year-old, the relationship between Barcelona and Messi is once again becoming stronger. The Barca president, after admitting that the bond between the two suffered when the contract couldn't be renewed due to financial constraints, stated during an interview with outlet 3Cat:
“With Leo Messi, we had a great relationship that got strained when we couldn’t renew his contract… but it’s improving again”.
Laporta continued:
“We hope he can receive the great tribute he truly deserves”.
The Inter Miami forward’s departure from Barcelona was officially announced in 2021 and it was a farewell which still hurts the fans. The heartbreaking announcement ended an era that began in 2000 when the MLS player joined the club’s youth academy.
Ever since the 2022 World Cup winner departed from the club, he has not returned to Camp Nou. However, since Laporta is now eager to organize the long-awaited tribute, fans might be able to see the reunion of the superstar at the Camp Nou.
