Story Highlights:

LAFC signs Son Heung-Min in a $26.5 million deal, making it the biggest transfer in MLS history.

The South Korean star vows to give his all for the club and earn his place among its greatest players.

In what’s shaping up to be one of the most talked-about signings in Major League Soccer history, Son Heung-Min has officially joined Los Angeles FC in a record-breaking transfer. But amidst the buzz surrounding the South Korean star’s arrival, Son took a moment to shift the spotlight to a club legend — Carlos Vela — whose legacy he deeply respects.

A Tribute to a Club Icon

During his first media interaction as an LAFC player, Son Heung-Min didn’t hold back his admiration for Vela, who played a foundational role in building the club’s stature in the MLS. The former Tottenham Hotspur forward, known for his humility and leadership, acknowledged that stepping into Vela’s shoes won’t be easy.

“Honestly, I’m not at his level yet. Carlos is incredible — a fantastic player. What he did for this team makes him a true legend,” Son Heung-Min said.

Vela, who left LAFC after an illustrious spell, racked up 189 appearances, 93 goals, and 59 assists during his tenure. His contributions helped the club secure two Supporters’ Shields, an MLS Cup title, and his individual brilliance earned him the 2019 MLS MVP award — accolades that firmly cement his place in the club’s history.

Son Heung-Min’s Ambition to Create His Own Legacy

While Son is aware of the shadow Vela’s legacy casts, he’s not shying away from the challenge. At 32, and entering the league as a Designated Player, he brings not just talent but also a desire to give his all for the LAFC badge.

“When my time here ends, I want people to remember me as someone who gave everything for this club. That’s why I’m here — to earn a place among those names,” Son remarked.

LAFC reportedly paid nearly $26.5 million to secure Son’s services, eclipsing the previous MLS record set by Atlanta United’s $22 million signing of Emmanuel Latte Lath. Son Heung-Min’s contract runs through 2027, with an option to extend until 2029.

Eyes on a New Era

Son’s addition signals a new era for LAFC — one that blends the club’s strong foundation with renewed ambition. He could make his much-anticipated debut this Saturday when LAFC travels to face Chicago Fire. All eyes will be on the South Korean superstar to see how quickly he can adapt and begin writing his chapter in the club’s story.
