The first U.S.-born pontiff, born Robert Francis Prevost and elected in 2025, toured the newly renovated stadium to meet Madrid's diocesan community. Crowds waved phones and sang religious hymns as the Holy Father walked through the venue and rode in a cart, smiling and blessing attendees.
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez personally welcomed the Pope, leading him on a tour of the trophy room and presenting him with an official club jersey personalized with "Robert F. Prevost" and the number 1. The event featured musical performances, including a 1,000-voice choir, creating an atmosphere of celebration and unity.
Pope Leo XIV, known for his warm rapport with the faithful, delighted the crowd with a playful quip referencing his support for the club. The gathering highlighted the Bernabéu's versatility as more than a football venue, echoing its use for major events and past papal visits.
The stop at the Bernabéu forms one highlight of the Pope's June 6–12 apostolic journey to Spain, which includes engagements in Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands, focusing on youth, culture, and the renewal of faith.
