Will Diego Simeone continue next season? Atletico Madrid boss gives major update

Simeone has confirmed he will continue as Atlético’s head coach for the 2026/27 campaign, ending speculation about his future at the club. He said:

“If I’m being honest, I’m thinking about next season. I’m thinking about myself. I will continue, but I’m thinking about how to approach a new season”.

The Argentine manager made the announcement following the conclusion of the 2025/26 season, in which the team finished fourth in La Liga, reached the Copa del Rey final, and advanced to the Champions League semi-finals.

According to reports, Simeone has already begun personal reflection and planning for the upcoming season. The decision comes after an agreement not to activate an early exit clause amid the club’s transition under new ownership by Apollo Sports Capital. Simeone, who has led Atlético since December 2011, is expected to focus on tactical adjustments and squad planning in the coming weeks.

Widely credited with reviving Atlético’s fortunes through his intense “Cholismo” style, Simeone has delivered two La Liga titles, two Europa League trophies, and multiple domestic honors during his 14-year tenure. He has also guided the club to two Champions League finals.
