Real Madrid maintain pressure in the La Liga title race with a dominant home victory.

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has come out strongly in support of Vinicius Jr. after the Brazilian winger endured a mixed reception from sections of the Santiago Bernabeu crowd during Los Blancos’ emphatic 5-1 victory over Real Betis.

Despite the dominant scoreline and an important La Liga win, the spotlight briefly shifted to Vinicius, who was whistled by some fans as he was substituted.

The match marked a statement performance from Madrid, who were without injured superstar Kylian Mbappe.

A stunning hat-trick from 21-year-old Gonzalo Garcia, coupled with goals from Raul Asencio and Fran Garcia, ensured the hosts stayed within four points of league leaders Barcelona. However, Vinicius’ quieter second half and the crowd’s reaction became a talking point post-match.

Alonso wasted little time addressing the situation, firmly backing the Brazilian forward and underlining his importance to the squad.

Speaking to reporters after the game, the Madrid boss stressed that Vinicius’ overall contribution went beyond surface-level criticism.

“I think Vini contributed a lot. He started the game well, he got [Ortiz] booked, so they had to change right-back. [Vini] was very dangerous, especially in the first half. He keeps going, he contributes to the team. I liked Vini's game, personally. He'll be fundamental for us now as we go to the Supercopa with the game against Atletico,” Alonso said.

The former Bayer Leverkusen manager also emphasized that Vinicius remains a key figure in Madrid’s attacking plans, particularly with crucial fixtures on the horizon.

A statement win despite missing stars

Madrid’s performance against Betis showcased their depth and attacking efficiency. Alonso expressed satisfaction with both the result and the broader context of the league race, highlighting how vital it was to start the new year with momentum.

“It was an important and well-deserved win to start the year at home. It's important to start like this: calmly and with good feelings heading into the Super Cup. I value the victory in terms of La Liga. Barcelona won yesterday, and we have to win a lot of games,” Alonso explained.

He added, “It was the last match of the first half of the season, and we've already reached 45 points. That would put us at 90 in La Liga. The average has to be winning many games in the remaining fixtures. The pace is going to be intense for what's to come.”

Focus shifts to the Super Cup

With La Liga pressure mounting and silverware on the line, Alonso made it clear that Madrid’s attention has already turned to their upcoming Super Cup clash against Atletico Madrid. For Vinicius Jr., the coach’s public backing could prove pivotal as the season enters a decisive phase.
