Veteran US golfer maps out comeback plans while continuing to compete internationally.

Patrick Reed is edging closer to a return to the PGA Tour after the circuit officially confirmed his eligibility to compete again following his earlier resignation from Tour membership.

The development marks a significant step in Reed’s efforts to realign his professional career with the tour where he first made his mark.

According to the PGA Tour’s clarification, Reed will be eligible to play as a non-member beginning August 25, 2026, provided he remains compliant with Tour regulations and avoids participation in unauthorized events during the interim period.

His resignation had come before any violations were recorded, allowing him a structured route back into PGA Tour competition.

Pathway back through non-member status

Once eligible, Patrick Reed can compete in FedExCup Fall events as a non-member, with additional opportunities available through sponsor exemptions or open qualifying routes. This phase will allow him to gradually re-establish competitive footing against the Tour’s field.

Looking ahead to the 2027 season, Reed is eligible to reinstate his PGA Tour membership fully and will enter events under the past champion category.

The timeline offers Reed flexibility while ensuring adherence to the Tour’s framework, reinforcing the PGA Tour’s stance on regulation while accommodating returning players.

DP World Tour plans remain central

Until his PGA Tour eligibility window opens, Patrick Reed will continue competing internationally. He has confirmed his intention to play on the DP World Tour, where he recently claimed victory at the Dubai Desert Classic.

His participation this season comes under honorary lifetime member status, underscoring his continued presence on the global circuit.

“I’m a traditionalist at heart, and I was born to play on the PGA Tour, which is where my story began with my wife, Justine,” Reed said.

He also expressed appreciation for the opportunities golf has provided and his motivation to keep competing at the highest level.

Reflecting on LIV Golf and future direction

Patrick Reed also acknowledged his stint with LIV Golf, where he competed as part of the 4Aces team alongside Dustin Johnson. He thanked Johnson and the LIV Golf organization for the experiences gained during that chapter of his career.

As LIV Golf prepares to open its fifth season in Riyadh in February, the league reiterated its emphasis on player mobility and long-term sustainability within professional golf.

With a defined route back to the PGA Tour and recent success overseas, Reed’s return now appears less a question of possibility and more a matter of timing, setting the stage for a closely watched comeback in the latter half of 2026.
