The Indian U-18 Men's Hockey Team achieved a spectacular milestone by clinching the Men's U-18 Asia Cup 2026 title after a dominant performance in Kakamigahara, Japan. The finale was illuminated by a spectacular individual performance from Ashish Tani Purti, who dismantled the Japanese defense with a magnificent hat-trick, finding the back of the net in the 2nd, 28th, and 34th minutes. Team captain Ketan Kushwaha further consolidated India's stranglehold on the match with a crucial goal in the 30th minute. Down but fighting, Japan managed to salvage a lone consolation goal in the 52nd minute through Numada Gaku, but it was far from enough to disrupt India's march to the championship.

In recognition of these stellar achievements on the continental stage, Hockey India announced substantial financial rewards for the young athletes and their guiding teams. Each player of the gold-medal-winning men's squad will receive a cash prize of INR 3 lakh, with INR 1.5 lakh allocated for each member of the support staff. Additionally, the governing body honored the Indian U-18 Women's Hockey Team for securing a commendable bronze medal earlier in the day, awarding INR 1 lakh to each player and INR 50,000 to each support staff member.

Ashish Tani Purti's hat-trick does the work for India

The tournament concluded with India heavily dominating the individual awards ceremony. Alongside his Player of the Match honors in the final, Ashish Tani Purti was crowned the tournament's Top Scorer with an incredible tally of 13 goals, while teammate Ayush Rajak was justly named the Best Goalkeeper of the competition. India’s success translated to the women's event as well, where Nausheen Naz finished as the tournament's Top Scorer with 12 goals, putting a definitive stamp on a historic and deeply memorable dual campaign for the nation.

India wasted no time making their presence felt in the opening quarter of the final, earning a crucial penalty corner within the first 90 seconds of play. Ashish Tani Purti capitalized on the early opportunity with a flawless execution in the second minute, firing the ball into the net to give the visitors an early 1-0 advantage. As the quarter progressed, Japan gradually found their rhythm and aggressively pushed back, mounting four dangerous circle penetrations. However, the Indian backline remained incredibly organized and resolute, successfully neutralizing the threat to preserve their slim lead heading into the first break.

The second quarter saw India ruthlessly extend their advantage despite facing sustained tactical pressure from the hosts. Japan looked menacing early on and earned their first penalty corner of the evening, but the equalizer continued to elude them against a disciplined defense. Sensing an opportunity to counter, India responded with immense purpose, earning a penalty corner of their own in the 28th minute. Ashish Tani Purti stepped up once again to deliver a blistering strike into the back of the net, doubling India's lead. With momentum firmly on their side, India struck again just two minutes later when Prahalad Rajbhar intercepted the ball in a dangerous area, surged forward, and unselfishly set up captain Ketan Kushwaha, who finished coolly to secure a commanding 3-0 cushion at halftime.

There was no drop in intensity from the Indian side coming out of the break, as they remained completely relentless in the third quarter. A silky, skillful run through the midfield by Varinder Singh unlocked the Japanese defense and drew another critical penalty corner. Ashish Tani Purti once again proved to be unstoppable from the set-piece, completing a magnificent hat-trick with a clinical finish in the 34th minute to hand India an insurmountable 4-0 lead and put the championship well within reach.

Refusing to back down quietly in front of their home crowd, Japan pushed exceptionally hard during the final quarter. Their efforts were rewarded in the 52nd minute when Numada Gaku successfully converted a penalty stroke to finally get his team on the scoreboard and reduce the deficit to 4-1. However, the goal proved to be nothing more than a late consolation. Though Japan managed to earn three additional penalty corners in a frantic closing stretch, they simply could not find a breach in India's rock-solid defense, allowing the young Indian squad to comfortably close out the match and seal a historic championship title.
