Montreal Canadiens may be preparing to make a calculated move ahead of the NHL trade deadline, with a familiar name once again surfacing in trade discussions.
After exceeding expectations this season, Montreal finds itself in a position few predicted just months ago — firmly in the playoff picture and trending upward at the Olympic break.
A year after finishing fifth in the Atlantic Division, Canadiens now sit second, a leap that has altered their approach to the trade market.
Rather than selling assets or focusing on long-term development, Montreal is increasingly viewed as a buyer, aiming to strengthen a roster that has proven it can compete with the league’s elite.
Shift in trade strategy alters Montreal Canadiens’ priorities
Early speculation suggested that general manager Kent Hughes would prioritize adding depth down the middle. However, recent developments indicate a change in strategy.
Instead of targeting a center, Montreal’s front office is now reportedly focused on acquiring a high-end winger capable of elevating the club’s top line.
The objective is clear: find a skilled forward who can complement Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, providing scoring punch and balance on Montreal Canadiens’ most important unit. That search has led Hughes back to a name that has been connected to Montreal before.
Jordan Kyrou emerges as a serious option
St. Louis Blues winger Jordan Kyrou has re-entered the conversation as a potential target. With the Blues moving toward a rebuild, multiple players have become available, and Kyrou is among the most intriguing options on the market.
Kyrou’s offensive upside and ability to play at a high tempo make him a strong stylistic fit for Montreal Canadiens’ evolving core.
While St. Louis has not publicly committed to a full teardown, the organization is reportedly open to discussing deals involving established contributors.
NHL insider David Pagnotta revealed that Kyrou would be willing to waive his no-trade clause if the right opportunity arises.
“He’s open to a move,” Pagnotta said on The Sheet with Jeff Marek. “I haven’t gotten the sense that it’s a direct request, but I think both sides understand where things are at. So whether it happens ahead of the deadline or around draft time, I think that’s a real significant possibility.”
Whether Hughes acts before the deadline or waits until the offseason remains to be seen, but the renewed link to Kyrou underscores Montreal Canadiens’ intent to capitalize on its momentum — and possibly accelerate its return to contender status.
