Toronto Maple Leafs have made a significant roster shake-up ahead of the trade deadline, parting ways with two veteran forwards as their playoff hopes continue to face mounting pressure. With the team slipping behind in the tightly contested Eastern Conference race, management opted to make strategic moves aimed at reshaping the roster and building future assets.
According to multiple reports, Toronto completed separate deals involving forwards Scott Laughton and Bobby McMann, sending them to the Los Angeles Kings and Seattle Kraken respectively.
Leafs move Laughton and McMann in deadline deals
Toronto traded Laughton to Los Angeles in a move that reportedly brings the Leafs a conditional third-round draft pick. The pick could improve depending on the Kings’ postseason outcome. As ESPN reported, Toronto’s return may increase in value depending on Los Angeles’ playoff success.
Meanwhile, McMann was dealt to Seattle in a separate transaction. In exchange, Toronto Maple Leafs are set to receive a second-round draft pick in 2027 along with a fourth-round selection in 2026. Both forwards are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents this summer, making the deals a strategic decision by the organization to maximize value.
Laughton’s short stint in Toronto
Laughton’s departure comes less than a year after Toronto invested heavily to bring him in. The Leafs had previously traded a first-round draft pick to the Philadelphia Flyers during last season’s trade deadline to acquire the veteran center.
The 31-year-old appeared in 63 games for Toronto, registering 10 goals and 16 total points during his stint with the team. Despite his experience and versatility, the Leafs opted to move him as the team recalibrates its roster strategy.
McMann’s rise ends with trade to Seattle
McMann’s journey with Toronto began when the team signed him as an undrafted college free agent in 2020. The 29-year-old forward developed into a reliable contributor, recording 19 goals and 32 points in 60 games this season.
Over his time with the franchise, McMann totaled 54 goals and 91 points in 200 appearances for Toronto Maple Leafs.
Playoff pressure driving Toronto’s decisions
Toronto currently sits eight points outside a playoff berth after back-to-back road losses to the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers. Both Laughton and McMann were held out of those games due to roster management decisions as trade discussions intensified.
Meanwhile, Seattle occupies the final Western Conference wild-card spot, holding a slim advantage over contenders such as Los Angeles, Nashville, and San Jose.
