Max Verstappen opened up on his closely fought battle with Pierre Gasly during the Japanese Grand Prix, shedding light on just how difficult it was to make progress despite showing competitive pace.
The Red Bull driver found himself locked in a prolonged duel with his former teammate, as both drivers ran at a similar level throughout the race. While Verstappen managed a decent recovery after the start, the challenge of overtaking Gasly proved far more complex than expected.

Reflecting on the encounter, Verstappen emphasized how evenly matched the two cars were, even suggesting he might have had a slight edge in outright speed.
“At least my start was a little bit better and I didn’t lose as many positions,” Max Verstappen said. “I got past a few cars and then of course at one point you hit a ceiling. I think with Pierre, we were very closely matched – maybe on pure pace we were a tiny bit faster, but that’s easy to say now.
“It was just very hard to pass. I could pass, but then I would get repassed straight away because my battery would be empty. I did try once and I got by but on the main straight you have no battery so that’s it.
“I just tried to keep pressure on, hoping for maybe a mistake or degradation from the tyres but that didn’t happen so we finished really close.”
Technical limitations frustrate Red Bull charge
The battle ultimately highlighted the constraints Verstappen faced during the race. Despite briefly finding a way past, energy deployment issues meant he could not hold position, allowing Gasly to immediately reclaim the place.
Rather than a lack of intent, Verstappen’s comments point to technical limitations that prevented him from converting pace into overtakes. His strategy then shifted to sustained pressure, but Gasly remained composed and error-free.
