Sergio Perez has yet to decide on his next move following his departure from Red Bull Racing, where he had been part of the team for four years. The Mexican driver, who was officially let go last month, has acknowledged the need for some time away from the sport to reflect on his future plans.
Perez’s 2024 Formula 1 season was marked by significant struggles after a promising start. Despite initial success, his performance faltered, with inconsistent results and a lack of speed. He ended the season with just 152 points, a stark contrast to teammate Max Verstappen’s dominant 437-point tally. This disparity had a direct impact on Red Bull's performance, with the team finishing third in the Constructors’ Championship, far behind their usual dominance.
While Perez issued a brief statement confirming his departure from Red Bull, he has remained relatively quiet about the split—until now. Speaking at a press conference in Leon, Mexico, Perez revealed his current focus is on taking a break from the sport.
Focusing on Family and Personal Time
"My priority is to enjoy myself, to do things I haven’t done, to be with my family," Perez said, as reported by ESPN Deportes. "In the next six months, I will make a decision on what I want for the next step in my career."
Though Perez is no longer racing for Red Bull, he will continue his association with the team through promotional and ambassadorial duties, participating in show runs and other events. Despite this connection, an F1 return is not guaranteed. His extensive experience and personal sponsorships make him a valuable asset, but Perez is taking his time before considering any offers.
Exploring New Opportunities in F1
While it’s too early for Perez to commit to another F1 season, the potential for a comeback remains open. One possibility could be a future role with the Cadillac team, which is set to enter Formula 1 in 2026. The American manufacturer, backed by General Motors, may be interested in experienced drivers like Perez as they establish themselves in the sport.
“I can’t give an answer right now about returning to Formula 1,” Perez admitted. “Everything happened very quickly at the end of last season, I didn’t expect to leave the team.”
Prioritizing Family Life
The sudden nature of his departure from Red Bull has prompted Perez to rethink his priorities, particularly in regard to his family. For years, he has been consumed by the demands of racing, with little time for personal pursuits. Now, he’s determined to focus on his young family.
“My biggest motivation now is to take my children on a good path and be more present in their lives,” he explained. "I am very excited to be with my family because in F1 you only think about being a better driver, preparing yourself better, you don’t have time for anything else.”
A Break and Soccer with His Son
Looking ahead, Perez is taking some time off for a holiday, with plans to spend quality time with his family. In late January, he will accompany his son, Sergio Perez Junior, to a soccer tournament in Mexico. This is a moment Perez is particularly excited about, as he shared: “My biggest motivation is that I have a soccer tournament with Checo [his son] in three weeks and we are going to travel around Mexico."
In this phase of his life, Perez is eager to step away from the pressures of Formula 1 and fully engage with his family, allowing himself the space to evaluate what his future in motorsport might hold.
Reflection on the Red Bull Split
Perez has taken some responsibility for the issues that plagued his 2024 season. Despite efforts to turn things around, he couldn’t break free from the slump. As negotiations between Perez and Red Bull progressed after the Abu Dhabi season finale, the decision was made to part ways, with Red Bull opting for Liam Lawson to replace him alongside Verstappen.
