India has won two bronze medals in shooting in the ongoing edition of the Paris Olympics 2024 so far. At the same time, Indian archers have not been able to open the medal account since 1988. After the defeat of the men's and women's teams in archery, Dhiraj Bommadevara's dream in the individual event was shattered by a mere distance of just 18 mm in the shoot-off and he could not even reach the medal round.
Dhiraj suffers exit from Round of 16
Actually, Dhiraj had made it to the round of 16 by registering a spectacular 7-1 victory against Adam Li of the Czech Republic in his first round of 32 match. But luck did not favor him in the round of 16. Dhiraj faced Eric Peters of Canada in the round of 16. He gave a tough fight to this Canadian player and won two out of five sets and lost two. Whereas the fourth set between the two ended in a tie at 30-30. Now due to the tie at 2-2, the match went into a shoot-off.
Heartbreak in Shoot-off
In the shoot-off, archers take one shot each, and the one who scores more wins. But here Dheeraj shot first and scored 10 (54.3 mm), while in response Canada's Peters also scored 10 (34.1 mm). That means the Canadian archer's ear was only 34.1 mm away from the center point and Dhiraj's arrow was 54.3 mm away. That is, despite scoring equal to Dhiraj, his arrow was at a distance of about 18 mm from the Canadian archer's arrow and had to be eliminated after losing.
