Paris Olympics 2024: World no.1 table tennis star suffers shocking exit a day after his racket was broken by photographer

Paris Olympics 2024: World No.1 table tennis player Wang Chuqin of China suffered a major setback in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. He clinched the gold medal in the mixed doubles event of the table tennis in the marquee event. After winning the gold medal his racket broke in a scuffle with the photographer. After this, when he came to play in the singles event, Sweden's Truls Möregårdh defeated him 4-2 in the round of 32 and knocked him out.
 

How did Wang's racket break?

 

Wang's happiness of clinching the gold medal in mixed doubles turned into sorrow as his favourite table tennis racket was accidentally broken by the photographer while taking a photo. He played his singles event with a new racket, he was disappointed. However, Wang accepted his defeat and did not make an excuse for the racket-breaking. After losing in the round of 32, Wang said that it did not have any significant impact on the match and the opponent played well.

Wang, who won the gold medal in mixed doubles, has been eliminated from the singles competition. But he still has a chance to win another medal. Now he will be seen playing in the table tennis team event for China.

 

Winner Moregard after defeating Wang

 

The triumphant Moregard said he "had a feeling I could beat him today", having never done so before in eight previous attempts.

"I've almost never taken a set against Wang so it's crazy to win here at the Olympics," the Swede, into the last 16 for the first time, told AFP.
