India's golf prodigy Aditi Ashok experienced an unexpected twist at the Asian Games 2023, leaving her and her fans disheartened. While the 25-year-old from Bangalore held a commanding seven-shot lead heading into the final round, she unexpectedly yielded the gold medal to Thailand's emerging talent, Arpichaya Yubol, currently ranked as the world no.206 in golf.

Ashok's performance in the third round, where she shot an impressive 61, had significantly raised expectations. She seemed poised for a decisive victory and a top-spot finish. However, a fateful double bogey altered the course of the game and consequently her anticipated victory.

Reflecting on her game, Ashok lamented, "It's a gold lost, anyone will look at it like that. I had a lead of seven shots, it was mine to lose. It was just a bad day for me; I missed a lot of fairways, which is one of my strengths. Usually I miss 1-2 fairways, today I missed at least 8. I never could get into position for any birdies." The gravity of the situation was evident in her voice and demeanor as she acknowledged that such a performance was unlike her typical gameplay.

In a candid revelation about her form during the event, Ashok shared that it was one of her most challenging days in the current golf season. "I shot a five over par today, I haven't had a bad day like that all season," she commented. Her spirits remained relatively high until the 16th hole. However, a mistimed shot that landed in the water sealed her fate, marking the point of no return from the double bogey.

Nevertheless, it's essential to highlight the silver lining in Ashok's journey at the Asian Games 2023. Despite the missed opportunity for gold, she made history by becoming the first Indian woman to clinch a medal in golf at the Asian Games. Furthermore, her commendable achievement ended India's prolonged 13-year wait for a golf medal at these games.

This wasn't the first time Ashok was close to creating a historic moment. In 2021, during the Tokyo Olympics, she was on the cusp of winning an Olympic medal. However, she missed out by a mere one-shot margin.

Aditi Ashok's journey in the Asian Games 2023 is a testament to the unpredictable nature of sports, where moments of brilliance can sometimes be overshadowed by unforeseen challenges. However, her accomplishments and resilience serve as an inspiration for many budding golfers and sports enthusiasts across India and beyond.
