Asian Games 2023: Tejaswin Shankar wins silver in Men's Decathlon after 49 years, breaks national record as well; Praveen secures bronze in Triple Jump

Shankar's silver-winning efforts saw India winning a medal in Men's Decathlon at the Asian Games for the first time in 49 years as he breaks the national record on the way as well.

Two medals came in quick succession for India as Tejaswin Shankar secured the silver medal in the Men's Decathlon event as Praveen Chitharavel secured the bronze medal in the men's Triple Jump event at the Asian Games 2023 on Tuesday, October 3.

In the Men's Triple Jump final on Tuesday, Praveen Chithravel narrowly surpassed fellow competitor Abdulla Aboobacker to clinch the bronze medal.

Praveen achieved his best jump of 16.68m, securing third place. He trailed behind China's Yaming Zhu and Yaoqing Fang, who took home the gold and silver medals respectively. Aboobacker, who consistently challenged Praveen, finished just shy of the podium in fourth place with a jump of 16.62m.

Interestingly, Praveen's top jump was on his first attempt, placing him in second position temporarily. Aboobacker began with a jump of 15.39m and quickly improved to his best, moving him to fourth. Zhu, showcasing his dominance, leaped past the 17m mark, ensuring his gold medal position.

Fang's best jump was 16.93m, solidifying his silver medal. The competition for the bronze medal intensified between Praveen and Aboobacker. Both faced disqualifications on their third attempts. In the subsequent jumps, Aboobacker managed distances of 16.45m, 16.35m, and 16.47m. However, these efforts fell short, and Praveen ultimately secured the third-place finish on the podium.
