The Indian Grand Prix track and field meet (IGP V) will witness the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) actively collecting close to 30 samples from athletes who participated in the two-day event. This includes specifically targeted athletes as they ensure that all contenders participating are untainted by doping.
Considering the event isn’t a national championship and doesn't feature all activities from a comprehensive national event, gathering 30 samples signifies NADA's commitment to the cause.
In preparation for the IGP V that kickstarted on Sunday, two dedicated doping control officers (DCOs) from NADA's Delhi team have joined the proceedings. The NADA office in Delhi has set a mandate for these officers to obtain nearly 30 samples.
From the data collected, a portion will be derived from top-tier athletes, especially those securing positions amongst the top three. In addition, specific athlete names have been discreetly provided by NADA Delhi to the DCOs, ensuring certain individuals are sampled, as shared by an insider.
India's Athletic Excellence in the Asian Landscape
Reflecting on past achievements, athletics brought home 20 medals for India at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, which encompassed eight gold out of a total of 70. Adille Sumariwalla, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) president, holds an optimistic view that India's medal tally will see a notable rise in the forthcoming Hangzhou Asian Games.
Given the recent stellar performances at the World Championships and Asian Championships, several officials project India clinching upwards of 25 medals in Hangzhou.
The Road to Hangzhou: Indian Athletes' Journey
The ensemble of Indian athletes is slated to embark for Hangzhou between September 25 and 26, with the main events commencing on September 29. Based on the event's regulations, athletes will gain access to the Asian Games Village a mere three days before their respective sports competitions commence.
Recent Controversies in Anti-Doping
Earlier in the month, Hima Das, a renowned sprinter, faced a provisional suspension imposed by NADA due to three whereabouts failures over a year. Additionally, Anjali Devi, the women's 400m champion from the National Inter-State Championships; Kirpal Singh, the previous year's Federation Cup gold-winning discus thrower; and leading shot putter Karanveer Singh, who secured silver in the National Inter-State, were all tested positive for prohibited substances in July.
