A significant milestone was reached at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest as three Indians qualified for the men's javelin final. This surge in Indian javelin prowess is evident against the backdrop of Neeraj Chopra's consistent global dominance.
On Friday, August 25, in a splendid showcase, all three Indian competitors progressed to the 12-man final during the qualification rounds. Intriguingly, the final will witness four athletes from the subcontinent, as Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan joins the fray alongside the Indian trio.
Nadeem, a Commonwealth Games Gold medalist, overcame injury challenges and bagged an automatic qualification spot. This achievement was shared with Neeraj Chopra and Jakub Vadlejch.
Neeraj Chopra's performance was particularly commanding, securing the top position with an imposing throw of 88.77m in his maiden attempt. Chopra's domination in such World Athletics Championship events is increasingly becoming a norm.
Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan closely trailed, registering a commendable 86.79m throw in his concluding attempt. Tokyo Olympics silver medalist, Jakub Vadlejch, rounded off the top three in the qualifications with a throw measuring 83.50m.
History for India!
Historically, this is the inaugural instance at the World Athletics Championships where three Indians have marked their presence in the men's javelin final, scheduled for Sunday, August 27. Recalling the previous championship, Neeraj, the silver medalist, and Rohit Yadav had made their presence felt in the final.
At the World Athletics Championships 2023, DP Manu, fresh off his silver win at the Asian Athletics Championships, secured the 6th position with a commendable throw of 81.31m. Concurrently, Kishore Jena, representing India in Qualification Group B, clinched the 9th spot with a noteworthy 80.55m throw.
