Asian Games 2023 will stage 481 events across 40 sports with 45 countries sending delegations.Neeraj Chopra will headline India's star studded 655-member squad for the 19th edition of the Asian Games.

The stage is set for the Asian Games 2023 which will be held in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8. The continental multi-sport event has already garnered substantial attention due to the involvement of 45 Asian nations. Although the official commencement is slated for September 23, certain events such as football, volleyball, table tennis, and cricket, with live coverage went underway from September 19.

 

Originally slated to be held in September 2022, the 19th edition of the Asian Games was pushed to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, Asian Games 2023 will stage 481 events across 40 sports (61 disciplines), with 45 countries sending delegations.

 

India's golden boy Neeraj Chopra will headline the India's star studded 655-member strong Asian Games squad. With 68 athletes, split into 35 men and 33 women, athletics boasts the most significant representation for India in any sport at the Hangzhou event.

Spotlight on Indian Athletes
 

The Asian Games has always been a platform where India showcases its sporting prowess. This year, India is fielding a robust contingent across 39 sports, marking the 19th edition of this quadrennial event. Notably, the games were originally scheduled for September 2022 but saw a postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

Leading the charge for India is the star javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra. With titles from both the Asian Games and the Olympics under his belt, Neeraj will be a significant attraction in Hangzhou. India's athletics team in itself is a force to reckon with, boasting 35 male and 33 female athletes.

The cricketing fraternity will keenly watch Ruturaj Gaikwad and Harmanpreet Kaur, who lead the men's and women's cricket teams, respectively, as the sport makes its debut in the Asian Games.

 

Other renowned Indian athletes to watch out for include weightlifting sensation Mirabai Chanu, ace boxer Lovlina Borgohain, wrestling powerhouse Bajrang Punia, badminton stalwarts HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth, and PV Sindhu, and many more.

 

Additionally, shot put record holder Tajinder Singh Toor, heptathlon champion Swapna Barman, and 1500m champion Jinson Johnson will aim to make their mark in Hangzhou.

 

Paris Olympic Quotas up for Grabs


A significant highlight of the Asian Games 2023 is the Olympic quotas it offers. Athletes and teams will vie for a total of 74 slots that guarantee a place in the Paris Olympics. The distribution includes six quotas in archery, ten in artistic swimming, a whopping 34 in boxing, two each in breaking, hockey, tennis, and water polo, ten in modern pentathlon, and six in sailing.

With the vast array of events and a strong lineup of athletes, the Asian Games 2023 promises to be an electrifying spectacle for sports enthusiasts worldwide.
