India’s campaign at the Badminton Asia Championships 2024 has drawn to an early close as double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and Asian Games medallist HS Prannoy lost their second-round matches in Ningbo, China on April 11. PV Sindhu fought hard for an hour and nine minutes before losing 18-21 21-13 17-21 against sixth seed Han Yue of China in a gruelling pre-quarterfinal of the Badminton Asia Championships. Sindu displayed a resilient performance in her first round and defeated Malaysian Goh Jin Wei. But, she slipped in the second round of the Badminton Asia Championships.
HS Prannoy bows out of Badminton Asia Championships
On the flip side, Asian Games medallist HS Prannoy crashed out after losing against world no. 19 Li Chun Yi in the men's singles second round. The seventh seed slipped to an 18-21, 11-21 loss in just 43 minutes.
India’s doubles hope also ended as Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto suffered defeat against third seeds Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida with a score of 21-17, 21-12 in the women's doubles second round.
PV Sindhu, who is in search of her top form ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, faltered in maintaining her momentum early in the decider. She started with a promising 8-4 lead but the Chinese opponent led India to unforced errors.
India’s campaign ending the second day of the Badminton Asian Championship is a worrying sign in the lead-up to the Paris Olympics. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty withdrew from the premier continental tournament.
Lakshya, Kidambi and duo of Treesa-Gayatri crash out after 1st round
Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth and the women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also bowed out after the first round of the tournament.
Priyanshu Rajawat struggled against Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia and suffered defeat 9-21, 13-21 in 39 minutes. In doubles, MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila faltered to the seventh-seeded Chinese pair of Liu Yu Chen and Ou Xuan Yi 21-23, 21-19, 24-26.
