In the ongoing World Championships, HS Prannoy, one of India's prominent badminton stars, showcased his prowess by advancing to the men's singles second round, registering a compelling straight-game victory against Finland's Kalle Koljonen.
HS Prannoy, currently ranked as the world number 9, extended his dominance over Koljonen, improving his head-to-head record to an impressive 3-0 against the Finnish player. Having reached the quarterfinals in the championship's previous two editions, Prannoy triumphed over Koljonen with scores of 24-22 and 21-10.
The initial game saw both shuttlers putting up a stiff competition. Koljonen swiftly gained an 8-4 lead, but Prannoy turned the tables with a remarkable sequence, capturing seven consecutive points and securing an 11-8 lead by the break.
The subsequent play was intense, with Koljonen showcasing his agility and technique. He managed to secure three game points, strategically pushing the shuttlecock away from Prannoy's forehand. Displaying immense composure, the Indian star saved these points, only to momentarily give the upper hand back to Koljonen. With the score tilted 22-21 in favor of the Finnish player, the game seemed unpredictable. But a series of errors by Koljonen, coupled with Prannoy's fierce cross-court smash, saw the latter clinch the game.
As the second game commenced, the players appeared evenly matched, with Prannoy holding a slight edge at 6-5. However, leveraging his experience and skills, Prannoy quickly extended his lead, creating a sizable gap during the break. The Finnish shuttler struggled to navigate through Prannoy's tactical gameplay, marked by deceiving angles and swift movements. The Indian champ soon secured a dominating lead, gaining 12 match points. Koljonen managed to save a couple, but Prannoy's decisive straight smash sealed the game and the match in his favor.
With this win, HS Prannoy not only solidifies his position in the World Championships but also reaffirms his status as a formidable force in international badminton.
