Dustin Poirier to Conclude His Career by Facing Old Rival

Dustin Poirier made an appearance at the Pat MacAfee Show on Friday and made the announcement that the fans dreaded. Poirier made it known that he is ready for his last dance inside the ring and picked Max Holloway as his partner for the occasion. As one of the most loved and successful fighters of all time will bid adieu to the sport, the moment is destined to be marked at a PPV show, and thus Poirier vs Holloway 3 will headline at UFC 318 in New Orleans. This means Poirier will close out his career in his home state of Louisiana.

“The UFC’s coming back to New Orleans in July,” Poirier said. “July 19 is going to be my final fight. I’m going to lay the gloves down in Louisiana where it all started for me. The whole journey started there. July 19th, me and Max Holloway are going to fight, five rounds, main event, pay-per-view for his current BMF title.”

Dustin Poirier also told Pat McAfee that fighting Max Holloway a third time to end his pro MMA career is rather fitting.

“There is not a better guy I could think to fight in my retirement fight,” Poirier said. “I was his first fight in the UFC back in 2012, and he’s going to be my last fight in the UFC. So, it’s an honor. He’s a legend, former champion, undisputed, current BMF champion. So, we’re going to put on another war.”

Dustin Poirier Has Got the Number of Max Holloway

In the previous two occasions when these two fighters traded shots inside the Octagon, it was Poirier who walked out as the winner. He defeated Max once during the initial phase of their respective careers at UFC 143. Their paths collided when they were at their peak as well, there as well Dustin got the win, and this time the win generated more buzz as not only he stopped Max's undefeated spree of 13 fights, he also claimed the interim Lightweight championship by beating him at UFC 236. Now both are at the twilight phase of their stint with UFC, and despite Poirier leading 2-0, a third fight still comes as fitting.

Can lightning strike three times for Poirier to close out his career, or will he hang up his gloves on a loss?
