The controversies didn’t end with the Rapid Championship. During the Blitz Championship, Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi shared the title after a tie-breaker.

The 2024 FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships, held in New York, were mired in controversy, with Magnus Carlsen at the center of multiple disputes. From dress code violations to accusations of match-fixing, the events overshadowed the chess action, culminating in sharp criticism of FIDE officials, including Deputy President Viswanathan Anand.

The Jeans Scandal: Magnus Carlsen’s Rapid Championship Exit

The controversies began during the Rapid Championship when Magnus Carlsen arrived wearing jeans, which were technically allowed under FIDE regulations. Despite this, he was fined and threatened with unpairing from subsequent rounds unless he changed into formal attire. In protest, Carlsen quit the event and launched a scathing attack on FIDE officials, questioning their qualifications for their roles.

Carlsen singled out Anand, accusing him of being unfit for his position as FIDE Deputy President. He also alleged that FIDE had threatened Freestyle Grand Slam players with removal from the World Championship cycle.

Arkady Dvorkovich Responds: A Defense of Anand and FIDE

Breaking his silence, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich addressed Carlsen’s remarks in an interview with ChessBase India. He defended Anand and called for constructive criticism instead of personal attacks.

“If you want to attack someone, attack me. You can criticise anyone (in FIDE) constructively. You can argue with anyone in FIDE. No personal attacks… Really want to thank Vishy Anand for his contributions,” Dvorkovich stated.

He also addressed Carlsen’s behavior after the jeans incident, labeling the Norwegian’s comments as excessive. “Carlsen’s words after the jeans incident were too much! It’s clear. He knows it, I know it. We should treat everyone with respect… Carlsen also acknowledged that some of his remarks were too much.”

 Dress Code Controversy: FIDE’s Perspective

Regarding the dress code violation, Dvorkovich clarified that FIDE had acted within its rules but admitted there was room for flexibility. “Magnus knows he breaks the rules. He acknowledges it. It’s not completely intentional. We spoke to Magnus and Henrik (Magnus’ father) after what happened. They acknowledged that the dress code was broken. The chief arbiter did everything according to the rules. In this sense, there was no violation of rules from FIDE side. But the rules also allowed some flexibility. A decision could have been different even with the rules.”

He concluded by noting that mistakes were made on both sides: “Everyone makes mistakes, including FIDE and Magnus Carlsen.”

Match-Fixing Allegations in the Blitz Championship

The controversies didn’t end with the Rapid Championship. During the Blitz Championship, Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi shared the title after a tie-breaker. However, a viral video raised accusations of match-fixing. In the clip, Carlsen was recorded suggesting to Nepomniachtchi that they play out draws if FIDE didn’t agree to their request to share the title.

The 2024 FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships highlighted tensions between Magnus Carlsen and FIDE. While Carlsen remains a polarizing figure in chess, his actions and comments during the event have sparked significant debate. As Dvorkovich emphasized, respect and constructive criticism are crucial for the sport’s growth, even amidst heated disagreements.
