India is set to script history after being awarded the hosting rights for the 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships, marking a significant milestone for the nation’s growing presence in global track and field. The prestigious event will be held in Bhubaneswar, offering fans a rare opportunity to witness world-class athletes compete on Indian soil.
Historic hosting rights for India
The decision was confirmed during the World Athletics Council meeting in Torun, where India secured the bid to host the biennial indoor event for the first time. This makes India only the fourth Asian nation to stage the championships, joining the likes of Japan, Qatar, and China.
World Athletics vice-president Adille Sumariwalla confirmed the development, stating:
"India has been awarded the World Indoor Athletics Championships for the year 2028."
The event, first held in 1985 in Paris, is one of the most prestigious competitions in indoor athletics, bringing together elite performers from across the globe.
Bhubaneswar’s rise as a global sporting hub
The championship will take place at the Kalinga Stadium complex in Bhubaneswar, a venue that has rapidly emerged as a key destination for international sporting events. The facility, equipped with a modern indoor arena, received approval following inspections by a World Athletics delegation earlier this year.
Officials believe the successful bid reflects India’s growing ambition to host global events, with further plans already in motion, including bids for future championships and even the Olympics.
Mondo Duplantis set for historic India debut
One of the biggest attractions of the 2028 event could be pole vault sensation Mondo Duplantis. The world record holder, widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in the sport today, may compete in India for the first time.
His potential appearance is expected to draw massive attention, offering Indian fans a chance to witness a modern legend up close.
Boost for Indian Athletics
Athletics Federation of India president Bahadur Singh Sagoo emphasized the importance of the event for the country’s sporting future.
"The World Athletics 2028 Indoor Championships being awarded to India marks the growing stature of Indian athletics. Track and field in the country has been in sharp focus since Neeraj Chopra’s success at the Olympics and World Championships."
As India continues to invest in infrastructure and talent development, hosting the 2028 championships could serve as a defining moment in its journey toward becoming a global athletics powerhouse.
