Khamzat Chimaev addresses the context behind his unexpected grappling exchange with Jon Jones.

The UFC champion clarifies how the moment started and why it was never a real confrontation.

Khamzat Chimaev has finally addressed the viral clip that sent the MMA world into a frenzy — a parking-lot grappling exchange between him and heavyweight great Jon Jones. While fans and pundits dissected the footage frame-by-frame, Chimaev has made it clear that the moment wasn’t the intense showdown many imagined. Instead, it was two champions joking around during an informal meet-up that quickly spiraled into an internet spectacle.

A viral moment misunderstood

Two weeks ago, footage of Chimaev and Jones tussling in a parking lot spread across social media, with many claiming the middleweight champion managed to take down the larger, heavier Jones. Given Jones’ history of playful scuffles with other fighters, the moment wasn’t entirely out of character. What caught fans’ attention was the apparent ease with which Chimaev got Jon Jones to the ground.

But according to Khamzat Chimaev, the reality was far more lighthearted than the commentary suggested. Speaking to ESPN MMA, he clarified that the clip lacked context and that the exchange wasn’t meant to be competitive at all.

“People are posting this wrestling sh**,” Chimaev said. “I’m always respectful to my guests, it wasn’t me that was trying to take him down, he started first. Then it slowly becomes wrestling and it was funny.”

He emphasized that the tussle wasn’t a serious contest, adding, “But it wasn’t real wrestling. People are saying I took him down, he liked it. He was there shooting something and having a good time.”

A respectful encounter, not a rivalry

Contrary to speculation, the moment wasn’t a preview of any future matchup nor a sign of tension. Khamzat Chimaev, who is currently recovering from injury, reiterated the mutual respect between him and Jon Jones. The heavyweight legend, meanwhile, is pushing for a fight at the UFC White House event next summer — a headliner that would be historic for both the promotion and Jones’ legacy.

Though the Chimaev-Jones exchange fizzled as quickly as it exploded, it did highlight something unmistakable: the massive star power attached to both fighters. A playful exchange between them can dominate headlines, ignite fan debates, and draw millions of views — even when it was never meant to be taken seriously.

A real feud lies elsewhere

While his interaction with Jon Jones turned out to be harmless fun, Khamzat Chimaev’s run-in with Ian Machado Garry at UFC Qatar was anything but. That conflict remains unresolved, hinting that the middleweight champion’s return to action later in 2025 may come with more than competitive stakes attached.
