Superstar boxer and Olympic medalist, Lovlina Borgohain clinched India's fourth gold medal at the ย Women's World Boxing Championship at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi on Sunday (March 26). Lovlina defeated two-time Commonwealth Games medalist Parker Caitlin Anne of Australia by a split decision in the 75 kg category.ย
The Indian pugilist won the first round 3:2 but her Australian opponent came back roaring in the second round and landed some heavy punches on Lovlina. The third round went to the wire but the Indian boxer prevailed in a crunch final clash.ย
After winning two bronze medals in the World Championships (2018 and 2019), Lovlina finally clinched the elusive gold medal.ย
Nitu Ghanghas scripted history as she won her maiden gold medal in the 48 kg category. Nitu opened India's gold medal account after routing Altantsetseg Lutsaikhan of Mongolia 5-0 in the final clash via a unanimous decision. After Nitu, Saweety Boora bagged a gold medal for India. The three-time Asian medallist Saweety Boora got the better of Wang Lina of China 4-3 in the 81kg final clash via a split verdict to clinch her maiden gold medal.
Nikhat Zareen once again made India proud as she clinched a gold medal on Sunday (March 26). Nikhat routed two-time Asian champion Nguyen Thi Tam of Vietnam 5-0 in the 50kg category's final clash.ย
With four gold medals, India marked their best show at the World Championships since 2006.
